How Ransomware Operates

Phishing emails, malware attachments and outdated software are the most common ways for ransomware to infiltrate a system. After that it is able to encrypt important files and sometimes even propagate through the network thus making it very clear how does ransomware work in a real-world scenario. The hackers then proceed to ask for the ransom usually in the form of cryptocurrency to give access back.

Important Effects:

  • Entry: Ransomware enters through phishing emails, weak links, or software that is not updated
  • Restriction and Spreading: It makes vital files non-readable and can infect other networks
  • Damage: It causes work stoppage, loss of money, and reduction of the company’s reputation hundred percent which happen

Ransomware generally ends up costing businesses more than what they have initially expected since it is not only the ransom that is paid. The companies still have to manage system repairs, lawyer’s fees, slow down production, and have staff who are not fully functional due to the incident, increasing the overall ransomware cost.
